CBS RADIO News KYW-A/PHILADELPHIA has announced the winners of scholarships and awards given to local high school juniors and seniors who participated in the station's annual "Newstudies" program teaching broadcasting.
The RICHARD MONETTI Scholarship was awarded to AVON GROVE HIGH SCHOOL senior ALICIA STEARN, who will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The award is named after MONETTI, a Newstudies 1986 graduate killed in the PAN AM LOCKERBIE bombing in 1988. STEARN said, “As soon as they said a student from AVON GROVE HIGH SCHOOL my stomach turned and I couldn't believe it, it was a 50/50 chance it was me at that point. It’s going to go towards paying the tuition of my classes in college.”
The MARK DRUCKER Journalism Award, named after the late former KYW reporter and longtime WMMR personality, was awarded to LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL's CHRISTOPHER JAZTRZEMBSKI. The Best Use of Sound Award, including a laptop computer, was awarded to ELIZABETH BINA of BANGOR AREA HIGH SCHOOL. Ten other students won $100 gift certificates as Outstanding Achievement Awards.
SVP/Market Manager MARC RAYFIELD, a Newstudies graduate himself, said “KYW NEWSRADIO is proud to continue the annual tradition of introducing high school students to the broadcast industry. Our hope in rewarding these exceptional students is that they will continue pursuing a media career and become tomorrow’s leaders.”
