Former GEORGETOWN men's basketball coach JOHN THOMPSON missed the BIG EAST Tournament last week and will miss at least the outset of WESTWOOD ONE's NCAA men's basketball tournament coverage as he continues to recover from corrective surgery for a benign twisted intestine performed two weeks ago.
The recovery is preventing THOMPSON, father of current GEORGETOWN coach JOHN THOMPSON III, from traveling to the extent required to cover MARCH MADNESS alongside play-by-play voice KEVIN KUGLER. It was unclear whether THOMPSON might be well enough to return before the FINAL FOUR.
During SATURDAY's BIG EAST final, with VILLANOVA defeating XAVIER to take the title, KUGLER said, “I know I speak for everyone at WESTWOOD ONE -- and in all circles of college basketball -- in wishing JOHN a speedy recovery. We hope to see him courtside again very soon.”
WESTWOOD ONE SPORTS EVP/Exec. Producer HOWARD DENEROFF added, “While we will miss JOHN’s presence to tip off the NCAA Tournament, we are most thankful that his health is improving and he is feeling better every day. There is a seat waiting for him whenever he is ready to return on the road to the FINAL FOUR.”
