Australian-born guitarist, singer and poet DAEVID ALLEN, an original member of the psychedelic rock group THE SOFT MACHINE and founder of avant-garde band GONG, died on FRIDAY in AUSTRALIA at 77, the NEW YORK TIMES reports. ALLEN had skin cancer that spread to his lungs. He had decided not to seek further treatment, noting that “the time has come to stop resisting and denying.”
Formed in FRANCE in the late 1960s, GONG began making records in 1970. Although the group never reached a wide audience, it became an early influence on the genre known as prog (short for progressive) rock.
ALLEN’s survivors include four children.
