EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS Chairman/Pres./CEO JEFF SMULYAN was one of nine CEOs to call on INDIANA Gov. MIKE PENCE to revise its controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
SMULYAN joined the CEOs of ANGIE'S LIST, ANTHEM, CUMMINS, INC., DOW AGROSCIENCES, ELI LILLY AND CO., INDIANA UNIVERSITY HEALTH, ROCHE DIAGNOSTICS CORP., and SALESFORCE MARKETING CLOUD in a letter voicing concern over the law, which has raised fears of businesses being given a green light to discriminate against gay customers. "Regardless of the original intention of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act," the letter states, "we are deeply concerned about the impact it is having on our employees and on the reputation of our state. All of our companies seek to promote fair, diverse and inclusive workplaces. Our employees must not feel unwelcome in the place where they work and live."
The letter calls on PENCE to "take immediate action to ensure that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act will not sanction or encourage discrimination against any residents or visitors to our state by anyone."
