PERCY SLEDGE, best known for his classic song "When a Man Loves a Woman," passed away this morning (4/14) in BATON ROUGE. CNN reports the cause of death was not immediately available.
SLEDGE’s career started in the 1960s, and he also scored hits with "Take Time to Know Her," "Warm and Tender Love" and "It Tears Me Up," He came up with his classic hit while working as a hospital orderly as he performed at night with a group called THE ESQUIRES COMBO. Initially, he gave the songwriting credit for "Woman" to two of the ESQUIRES, CALVIN LEWIS and ANDREW WRIGHT, who had helped him with a few chords -- which ultimately prevented him from making any money from songwriting royalties.
SLEDGE was inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in 2005.
