Just days after announcing a FRIDAY, JULY 17th performance benefitting SANDY HOOK PROMISE (NET NEWS 4/15), the organization founded after the 2012 shooting at SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, CBS NEWS reports that TIM MCGRAW is fending off criticism from gun rights activists.
Additionally, a WASHINGTON POST piece published THURSDAY, (4/16) links to several blogs from gun supporters that characterize MCGRAW’s appearance as a “gun control fundraiser.” MCGRAW addressed that claim with a statement to THE POST, saying, “Let me be clear regarding the concert for SANDY HOOK given much of the erroneous reporting thus far. As a gun owner, I support gun ownership. I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety -- most certainly when it relates to what we value most, our children. I can’t imagine anyone who disagrees with that.”
Fellow artist BILLY CURRINGTON was also scheduled to perform but has since backed out, posting to his FACEBOOK page, “I’ve never been one to take on controversial issues -- I’m a singer. I do feel strongly about honoring and supporting the SANDY HOOK community and will be making a donation to a local organization.”
