EMMIS Chairman/Pres./CEO JEFF SMULYAN has been on the forefront of pushing for the FM chip to be turned on in all smartphones since the introduction of the NEXTRADIO app and the plan for SPRINT to spearhead the movement.
And, WEDNESDAY's letter to two Congressmen (NET NEWS 4/29) by FCC Chairman TOM WHEELER to let the decision to turn them on, or not turn them on in smartphones, be a marketplace decision rather than a mandate was a disappointing decision for SMULYAN.
ALL ACCESS spoke to SMULYAN who commented, "I think we had a good meeting with WHEELER's staff. This is not an accurate decision so far that it's a market decision as we have several big companies who have decided not to turn those chips on.
"However, we are very encouraged about the vendor conversations we are currently having toward having them turned on. And in the process, we want Mr. WHEELER to become more educated about the smartphone market and the realities of the market conditions. The more people who understand this the better off we are. The time has come for the FM chip in all smartphones to be turned on."
