May 21, 2015 at 2:50 PM (PT)
On MONDAY (5/18), CAPITOL MUSIC GROUP welcomed a VIP crowd of radio and music executives to their "2ND ANNUAL UPFRONTS" event at the HYDE SUNSET nightclub in LOS ANGELES to experience new music from their rising stars HALSEY, TORI KELLY, ALLEN STONE and GLASS ANIMALS. In addition, the crowd was treated to an interview with two-time ROCK N' ROLL HALL OF FAME Inductee ROD STEWART.
CAPITOL EVP MICHELLE JUBELIRER kicked off the evening by introducing the crowd to the music of GLASS ANIMALS who, she explained, were the "#2 most-streamed artist in the world this past year." The band performed "Black Mambo" and "Gooey," joking to the crowd "This is the shortest gig we've ever played!"
Up next, and fresh off her staggering performance at the BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS the night before, TORI KELLY sang a soulful unplugged/a capella version of her hit single, "Nobody Love," which drew gasps of approval from the audience. TORI then welcomed her band to the stage to perform her new single, "Should Have Been Us," which will be impacting Top 40, Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot AC on MONDAY (6/1).
Then came a video interview of ALLEN STONE, who talked about the recording process of his debut single, "Freedom," and his new album "Radius," which will be released on TUESDAY (MAY 26th). STONE and his band then took the stage to perform two songs from the album, "Freezer Burn" ("it's not about BEN & JERRY's," quipped the singer) and "Love."
We were then treated to an interview of the legendary ROD STEWART, who answered questions from HITFIX.COM's MELINDA NEWMAN. STEWART talked about his forthcoming album "Another Country" (due in OCTOBER) an album whose concept he explained by saying "I've wondered about being in the armed forces, away from your sweetheart and your family ... that must be heartbreaking ... that is what "Another Country" is all about." He also discussed being on top of the Hip-Hop chart, by way of the PYTHON LEE JACKSON recording "In A Broken Dream" (which features STEWART's vocals), a song that is sampled by rapper A$AP ROCKY on his new single, "Everyday" (featuring MIGUEL and MARK RONSON). The audience was then treated to STEWART's new song, "Stay With Me Tonight."
The night's entertainment was wrapped up with an exciting performance from HALSEY (whose website bio reads simply "I am HALSEY. I will never be anything but honest. I write songs about sex and being sad."
HALSEY was one of the most-tweeted and talked-about artists at this year's SXSW, whose first ever LONDON gig sold out in under a minute, after being moved to a larger venue to accommodate demand. She opened her set with the song "Castle," followed by "New Americana," which the singer explained was about "...being raised on pop culture and not afraid to be part of it." She closed the set with her new single "Ghost."
Some of the VIPs in attendance included: SCOOTER BRAUN (SCHOOLBOY RECORDS/SB MANAGEMENT), artist manager BRUCE FLOHR, GRAMMY producer KEN EHRLICH, BRANDON BELL (APD/MD KBIG), BEATA MURPHY (KIIS APD/MD), MICHAEL LACROSSE (PD KOST), PHIL GUERINI (VP/Programming/GM RADIO DISNEY), NELSON AGUIRRE (On-Air with RYAN SEACREST), DJ REFLEX (a.k.a.
