The UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT CHATTTANOOGA is considering a partnership with crosstown PBS affiliate WTCI-TV as a way to stem expenditures at noncommercial News-Talk-Variety WUTC/CHATTANOOGA, reports CURRENT.ORG.
The college has been looking at ways to reallocate $5.8 million in its budget to cover pressing priorities, and WUTC has been tapping the school's reserves, with $500,000 of its $1.4 million budget for 2016 projected to come from the school. A combination of the stations is one solution being considered; Assistant Vice Chancellor for Communication and Marketing CHUCK CANTRELL told CURRENT that “The idea of a combined facility where we might actually commingle some of our finances is just a new idea.... The concept is something we’ve talked about for quite a while, and people really like it,. The problem is when we look at financing it.”
CANTRELL said that UTC has formed a task force to look at the partnership idea, but WTCI GM PAUL GROVE has previously said that any talk of a merger is "premature" and that WTCI does not have the money for subsidizing the radio station, although he did not completely preclude a deal moving forward.
