Cancer Claims Former Alabama Crimson Tide Radio Analyst Doug Layton

DOUG LAYTON, who served as color commentator for ALABAMA football for over 30 years before his 2001 retirement, died WEDNESDAY night after a battle with stomach cancer at 81.
LAYTON, a local radio personality in BIRMINGHAM for many years at WSGN-A, alongside TOMMY CHARLES at WYDE-A, WAQY-A, and as the late JOHN ED WILLOUGHBY's partner at WERC-A and WAPI-A, WJOX-A, and WYDE-F, was analyst and pre-and-postgame host for the CRIMSON TIDE from 1969-2001, working alongside JOHN FORNEY, PAUL KENNEDY, and ELI GOLD. He also called ALABAMA basketball for 11 years.
LAYTON's local show partner WILLOUGHBY died in MARCH. KENNY STABLER, who later handled analysis on the TIDE network, passed away earlier this month.
