WUBU/South Bend, IN Faces Deadline For New Antenna & Tower

ABE THOMPSON's Urban AC WUBU (MIX 106)/SOUTH BEND is facing a FEBRUARY 28th deadline to either relocate its broadcast antenna or go off the air, reports the SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE.
The tower is currently on the roof of the former CHASE TOWER building. The building is being renovated by the new owner THE TOWER AT WASHINGTON SQUARE LLC. They informed the station that the tower has to be removed because the structure will be transformed to a 183-room ALOFT HOTEL and 83 apartments.
“WUBU has been there for 25 years, and we have had an impact on the community because we’ve been able to help everybody from local churches to the GOODWILL, to homeless shelters to NOTRE DAME to the ma-and-pa store who need it as a vehicle to promote their services and products -- and it will be gone (if the station goes off the air) because those organizations won't have the resource as a vehicle to promote themselves," THOMPSON said.
He also told the TRIBUNE that he believes the station's closing would have a negative impact on the quality of life of fans of Urban AC music because no other station in the area targets that audience.
The station is trying to raise monies through various fundraising efforts including listener donations and a gofundme.com page. A fundraiser has also been scheduled for the end of JANAUARY.
