Former WLTH-A/GARY, IN host VELIA TANEFF and her daughter LANA TANEFF were found dead at their homes in CALUMET TOWNSHIP, IN SUNDAY (1/17), and a person of interest was in custody MONDAY in relation to the deaths. The body of LANA TANEFF, 63, was found in the family home, and VELIA TANEFF, 86, was found in a rental property they owned next door; both women's deaths were determined to be from strangulation and blunt force trauma.
ABC O&O WLS-TV/CHICAGO reports that a person of interest is being held in MONTPELIER, OH and will be questioned there; the unnamed person was arrested on unrelated charges and was allegedly in possession of the TANEFF's stolen car. The man was described by the CHICAGO TRIBUNE as having a "violent criminal history" and having done handyman work for VELIA TANEFF in the past; a relative of the man called police SUNDAY saying that the man had stolen the relative's wallet and voicing concern that he couldn't reach VELIA TANEFF.
