Ronn Owens Moving From KGO To KSFO In San Francisco, KGO Goes Into Stunt Mode
More Changes Coming Tuesday; Several KGO, KFOG Staffers Exit
March 31, 2016 at 1:01 PM (PT)
CUMULUS News-Talk KGO-A/SAN FRANCISCO is moving longtime midday talk host RONN OWENS to sister KSFO-A. OWENS will host afternoons 3-6p on KSFO starting MONDAY (4/4), currently featuring WESTWOOD ONE's MARK LEVIN in that slot.
ALL ACCESS hears that other changes yet to be announced are in store for KGO; rumors in The City are placing the syndicated ARMSTRONG AND GETTY, moving from crosstown iHEARTMEDIA News-Talk KKSF-A (TALK 910) (see separate story below), in mornings at KGO, and several staffers from the news department have been fired. OWENS said in announcing his move on the air TODAY that he was not told what will replace him on KGO. And meanwhile, the station removed its regular programming at Noon TODAY and are running a stunt teasing that "the next generation of KGO 810 is coming APRIL 5th at 6 am" with music and brief clips of people talking about their concerns and telling brief stories illustrating them, and about SAN FRANCISCO in general. The website no longer lists any programming other than links for weekend brokered shows.
A memo from VP/Market Manager JUSTIN WITTMAYER sent to CUMULUS/SAN FRANCISCO staff obtained by ALL ACCESS acknowledges that "We had the difficult but necessary task today of restructuring our KGO and KFOG station staffs to allow us to meet the new needs of these two stations as we invest in new programming that is redefined, refocused and of the highest quality ... (including) elimination of a number of full-time and part-time positions across these two stations, primarily in the news department at KGO and in key dayparts at KFOG. I want to thank those professionals who are leaving us for their contributions and service to KGO and KFOG, and wish them only the best as they continue on in their careers."
Triple A KFOG, which BRYAN SCHOCK is now programming (see separate story above), is running liners on the air saying "The evolution is coming APRIL 20th."
PD MIKE ANTHONY said, “With RONN OWENS taking over afternoons from 3p-6p, KSFO is now live and local in both drive times. This is also a great opportunity for a whole new audience to hear the brilliance that has made RONN a legend in SAN FRANCISCO radio. We couldn’t be more excited to have RONN driving afternoons on 560 KSFO.”
In the official release, OWENS said, “What a unique opportunity to keep doing what I’ve been doing for the past 40 years, in the place I love doing it , the BAY AREA … and I’m just a couple of clicks down the dial.”
And ARMSTRONG AND GETTY tweeted:
