CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (97.1 THE TICKET)/DETROIT has inked 2-6p (ET) "VALENTI AND FOSTER" co-host MIKE VALENTI to a new long-term contract.
VALENTI joined THE TICKET in 2004 to co-host what was then called "THE SPORTS INFERNO" with former DETROIT NEWS columnist TERRY FOSTER; his criticism of the DETROIT LIONS led to a controversy near the end of last season in which he and TICKET management accused the LIONS of moving play-by-play rights to crosstown CUMULUS News-Talk WJR-A for next season on the team issuing an ultimatum that THE TICKET fire VALENTI if the station wanted to keep the game broadcasts. SVP/Market Manager DEBBIE KENYON stood by VALENTI in the subsequent uproar.
PD JIMMY POWERS said, “I am pleased MIKE will continue to be part of many Detroiters' drive home every day for years to come. He has the uncanny ability to give listeners a unique perspective, honesty and strong opinions like very few in the industry.”
KENYON added, “MIKE is an extraordinary talent who I respect personally and professionally. He is opinionated and often controversial, but is always able to back it up with facts. MIKE is a true professional and we’re thrilled to have him on the 97.1 team for years to come.”
VALENTI said, “I’m happy to continue to be part of one of the great Sports Talk stations in the country where I can speak to, inform and entertain my loyal audience daily."
