ALL ACCESS extends sympathies to family and friends of longtime BRAZOS COMMUNICATIONS Country KHKX/MIDLAND-ODESSA morning co-host MIKE LAWRENCE, who passed away unexpectedly SATURDAY evening (5/21) in NEW MEXICO. Among his survivors include his wife, DANA CAROLE, who was also LAWRENCE’s morning co-host for 25 years on their award-winning “MIKE AND DANA SHOW.
His passing comes one month before the couple's WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22nd enshrinement into the COUNTRY RADIO HALL OF FAME (NET NEWS 1/5). MIKE AND DANA retired from radio in late 2014, and soon after relocated to NEW MEXICO (NET NEWS 12/15/14).
MIKE AND DANA handled mornings at three different stations in the MIDLAND–ODESSA market during their 25 years there, achieving success at each one of them. After first teaming at Country KNFM in 1990, the pair moved across the street to KGEE for an 11-year run that garnered them a CMA Small Market Personality of the Year Award and two CMA Station of the Year trophies. In 2001, they launched Country KHKX for crosstown BRAZOS COMMUNICATIONS, taking their audience with them. Another CMA Personality of the Year Award came in 2007. As he had at KNFM and KGEE, LAWRENCE programmed KHKX in addition to handling mornings. A page honoring the couple has been posted on the KHKX website with this message: “We send our prayers of comfort to DANA and their family. We will miss him very much.” Services are pending.
