Photographer JOHN CURTIS RICE has filed a copyright infringement suit against COX MEDIA GROUP, LLC, COX RADIO, INC., and COX COMMUNICATIONS, INC. In the suit, filed on TUESDAY (6/21) in NEW YORK Eastern District Court, RICE alleges that COX used a copyrighted photo he had taken of COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY student NAYLA KIDD, who had gone missing and then returned, on 47 of its radio and newspaper websites without permission.
The suit seeks damages (either unspecified or the statutory $150,000 per work maximum) for the alleged infringement, plus from $2,500 up to $25,000 for each incident of removing the photo's credit line.
