The FRIENDS OF 88.5 FM group which raised over $7 million in a "Save KPLU" campaign to buy Jazz-News-Talk KPLU/TACOMA-SEATTLE and block the sale of the station by PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY to the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON has signed an agreement with PLU after two weeks of negotiations.
The non-profit community group, made up of staff members and listeners wanting to preserve the station's format rather than see it become a part of the KUOW/SEATTLE operation, will be paying $7 million plus $1 million in underwriting announcements for PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY for the station. In addition, the station may remain in its campus studios for three years rent-free but will need to find new quarters after that.
