The CONFER RADIO TALENT INSTITUTE begins TODAY (6/5) on the campus of BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA with opening comments from lifelong broadcaster and COUNTRY RADIO HALL OF FAME Class of 2016 inductee (NET NEWS 6/23) KERBY CONFER. Joining him with opening remarks are BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA Dean/College Of Liberal Arts DR. JAMES BROWN; Department Chair DR. JASON GENOVESE; and Assoc. Professor/On Campus Director DR. DAVID MAGOLIS.
All ten days of the INSTITUTE are on campus, except for one day in PHILADELPHIA at the CBS RADIO studios, where sessions will be taught by Play-by-Play Announcers MERRILL REESE of the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, MARC ZUMOFF from the 76ers, and JIM JACKSON from the NHL FLYERS. On FRIDAY morning (7/8), the students will be the live studio audience as CBS RADIO Country WXTU/PHILADELPHIA’s Morning Crew, ANDIE and FRANK, broadcast their show live from the BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY campus and the CONFER RADIO TALENT INSTITUTE.
KERBY CONFER commented, “We want to make a difference, to give back and give this next generation a good firm foundation in how the communications business works, not just radio; radio leads to TV, and often times, TV back to radio, to the internet; it’s all intertwined now. I think we are going to birth a whole new generation of radio people.”
Teaching the students in their specific areas of expertise will be broadcasters from the state, NEW YORK CITY, WASHINGTON, D.C., and BALTIMORE from FOREVER MEDIA, CBS RADIO, iHEARTMEDIA, SEVEN MOUNTAINS MEDIA, ENTERCOM, CUMULUS MEDIA, and EQUITY COMMUNICATIONS, as well as from the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, FLYERS, 76ers, PAT GARRETT CREATIVE, and others.
College students from around the state and region have applied and been accepted into the INSTITUTE from BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY, PENN STATE, INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY, PENNSYLVANIA HIGHLANDS, and TOWSON UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND. These students, who have a passion and desire to be in radio, will be taught on almost all aspects of radio, including on-air, sports, news, production, promotions, digital/social media, and all will complete the RAB radio sales course to become certified as Radio Marketing Professionals. There are no breakout sessions; all students are in every session.
NATIONAL RADIO TALENT SYSTEM Founder/Pres. DAN VALLIE said, “When you talk about the future of the industry, you have to talk about people. We have to embrace technology…and should…and ultimately technology levels the playing field when everyone embraces it….but it always has been and always will be people that make the difference. That is why we do the RADIO TALENT INSTITUTES, to have that talent farm of talented, well-rounded, young people the industry wants and needs.”
Individual broadcasters, groups or organizations who would like to join the NATIONAL RADIO TALENT SYSTEM in establishing and sponsoring a RADIO TALENT INSTITUTE on a campus in their state and region should contact VALLIE via email or call (828) 262-1502.
