WSOU/South Orange, NJ, Celebrates 30 Years Of Metal With Monday Night Mayhem In August

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY Rock WSOU (89.5 FM)/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ celebrates the 30th anniversary of its "loud rock format" by bringing back its MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM for five specials broadcasts in AUGUST featuring former hosts.
WSOU PD HOLLY FITZPATRICK commented: “MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM was a staple of WSOU for 15 years and helped launched the careers of bands like SICK OF IT ALL, BIOHAZARD, CARNIVORE and CRO-MAGS. As part of our 30 YEARS OF METAL celebrations, I am thrilled that we are able to not only bring the show back, but also include some of the original hosts.”
MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM was the brainchild of then-student MISSI CALLAZZO to showcase songs or bands considered too heavy for WSOU’s nascent all-metal format. Over the years, most MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM bands became part of WSOU’s regular rotation.
Noted station GM MARK MABEN: “It is hard to believe that there was a time when some songs by ANTHRAX and METALLICA and bands like TESTAMENT and MOTORHEAD were considered too intense for regular rotation. Today, these are the types of bands our listeners like to hear again and again,.It is an honor for us to bring back WSOU alumni to educate listeners about the station’s history and that of the music we play.”
“It’s amazing to me that it’s been 30 years since WSOU changed format and we started MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM,” said CALLAZZO. “I can’t wait to get behind the mic and play the bands that gave WSOU its place in music history.”
Beginning AUGUST 1st, MONDAY NIGHT MAYHEM will air from 10p to MIDNIGHT (ET) every MONDAY during the month. Currently President of MEGAFORCE RECORDS, MISSI CALLAZZO will be the first host on AUGUST 1st, followed by MATT YOUNG ('90-'93), currently WARNER MUSIC GROUP EVP/Artist Services and KIM BURKE ('95) on AUGUST 8th; NECA Director of Product Development RANDY FALK ('93-'95) and TOM FERRARI ('93) on the 15th; IRIS DURAN ('99-2001) on the 22nd, and a return of all the alumni hosts for a roundtable discussion on the 29th to share some of their favorite memories of their time at WSOU. This program will also be available as a podcast after it is broadcast.
