The NEW YORK ISLANDERS' radio situation has been unusual for the last several years, but this year, the team has secured full-market coverage through the use of two additional stations. CBS RADIO Sports WFAN-A-F/NEW YORK will air 30 ISLES games, and SALEM News-Talk WNYM-A (AM 970 THE ANSWER)/NEW YORK will air the other 52 regular season games; WFAN and WNYM will alternate carriage of playoff games.
The team remains on HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY noncommercial WRHU/HEMPSTEAD, NY for NASSAU COUNTY coverage. And WFAN remains the flagship for NEW JERSEY DEVILS hockey, but this year will not carry the entire DEVILS schedule, with 59 games on WFAN and 23 on a station or platform to be named later.
For ISLANDERS broadcasts, CHRIS KING is back as play-by-play voice for his 24th season, with GREG PICKER returning as analyst for the 2nd season.
“We are thrilled to welcome WFAN-AM/FM and AM 970 THE ANSWER to the NEW YORK ISLANDERS Radio Network and to greatly expand the reach of Islanders games throughout the tri-state area,” said BROOKLYN SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT CEO BRETT YORMARK. BS&E, owner of the BROOKLYN NETS, operates the business end of the ISLANDERS, who moved from their longtime NASSAU COLISEUM home to BS&E's BARCLAYS CENTER in BROOKLYN last year.
“The ISLANDERS are delighted for our fans that we will have such excellent radio coverage this season,” said ISLANDERS co-owner JON LEDECKY.
“We are pleased to partner with BROOKLYN SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT to add NEW YORK ISLANDERS games to our already expansive roster of NY team coverage,” said WFAN VP/Programming MARK CHERNOFF. “As the #1 sports station in the country, WFAN is uniquely poised to capture and share the excitement around hockey season with its legions of fans.”
“Everyone here at SALEM MEDIA OF NEW YORK/WNYM AM 970 THE ANSWER is excited about being a home of one of NEW YORK's iconic sports franchises,” said SALEM NEW YORK VP/GM JERRY CROWLEY. “To add the ISLANDERS with their great tradition of excellence is a tremendous complement to our outstanding talk, news, information, sports programming format.”
As for the DEVILS, on WFAN for the 12th consecutive season, MATT LOUGHLIN and SHERRY ROSS will return to call the games. “NEW JERSEY DEVILS hockey has been a staple on WFAN for more than a decade and we’re proud to continue our partnership,” said DEVILS and PRUDENTIAL CENTER President HUGH WEBER. “Interest in hockey continues to expand at a rapid pace in the region and we are eager to work with WFAN and the ISLANDERS to accelerate the sport's growth.”
