With a portfolio of companies from mobile phone operators to record labels, French company VIVENDI may uniquely straddle the converging worlds of media and communications. But unlike many investors who are pouring funds into mobile telecommunications, VIVENDI sees the future of the company more closely tied to the media side of the equation.
"In telecoms, the opportunities are rare, and there are no real cross-border advantages," said VIVENDI COO JEAN-BERNARD LEVY. "You find the limits are quickly reached on a national level." Media offer tremendous global opportunities for leverage, LEVY said, and VIVENDI will emphasize media opportunities over telecommunications deals.
For future media growth, LEVY said, the company will concentrate on the areas in which it is already strong: music, led by UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP; online games, through the VIVENDI Games division, which owns BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT; and programming created by CANAL PLUS.
