UK broadcasting regulator OFCOM grants the license for a new commercial FM in MANCHESTER to GUARDIAN MEDIA GROUP. GMG, which already owns SMOOTH FM and CENTURY FM plus the MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS in the market (and whose flagship paper started as the MANCHESTER GUARDIAN), plans a station with the slogan "ROCKTALK 106.1" for the new facility and will target 35-64-year-olds with a hybrid Rock and Talk format. The bid was selected from among 11 applicants for the frequency.
The commission also granted a new FM in the HEREFORDSHIRE-MOMNOUTHSHIRE area to LASER BROADCASTING. The new station will air a Classic Hits format.
