FCC Rejects Objections, Renews WSIA/Staten Island License

The FCC has rejected a petition by THE VOICE OF STATEN ISLAND INC. to deny the license renewal of THE COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND's noncommercial WSIA/STATEN ISLAND, NY, as well as an informal objection to the renewal by Dr. DAVID SHEAR. VSI complained that the college had delegated operation of the station to the student union and made several other programming-related allegations that the Commission rejected, but the Commission did admonish the station for not making the public file consistently available to the public.
In another ruling, the Commission reversed its staff ruling and granted CALVARY CHAPEL OF JOPLIN an LPFM CP in JOPLIN, MO and CALVARY EMERALD COAST INC. an LPFM CP in DESTIN, FL. A coalition of parties including the LAWYERS GUILD and PROMETHEUS RADIO PROJECT objected to the applications on the grounds that the CALVARY CHAPELS were affiliated with the CALVARY CHAPEL OF TWIN FALLS (ID), whose ownership of full-power signals would make it ineligible to own LPFMs; the Commission ruled that the individual applicants appear not to be the same as the larger entity.
The Commission also issued proposals for $1,500 fines on CHARLES E. JONES JR. (WVFG/UNIONTOWN, AL), BHAGWAN DADLANI (W300AN/MONTGOMERY, AL), and KNOX COLLEGE (WVKC/GALESBURG, IL) for failure to timely file license renewal applications.
