Fired WSBG Jock Turns Down Offer To Return

The chance to return as a Community Relations Director was made on TUESDAY by EVP RICK MUSSELMAN. The offer also stipulated SMITH serve a two-week suspension. SMITH declined the offer on WEDNESDAY, MUSSELMAN said.
SMITH, host of "GARY in the Morning," was fired by the station after using in an on-air contest lhe controversial remark made by syndicated radio host DON IMUS. MUSSELMAN defended his decision to terminate SMITH for his on-air remarks, saying it wasn't the first time SMITH had crossed the line, and his firing was the cumulative result of his past on-air behavior.
"We won't put him back on the air at the station," MUSSELMAN said. In explaining the offer, MUSSELMAN said, "GARY has done a tremendous amount of good in the community, and we felt he could continue that service off air."
Asked why he turned down the position, SMITH said, "I was hired as a morning personality and that's what I want to do and that's what I still want to do." Asked if HOWARD STERN had offered him a job, SMITH replied "no comment." Last week, STERN said WSBG overreacted by firing SMITH. STERN said SMITH would have an offer at SIRIUS waiting for him, as long as one is available.
