JAMES B. DAVIS, founding member of world-famous gospel group THE DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS, passed in PHILADELPHIA on APRIL 17. He was 91.
The DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS started in 1939 and peaked in the 1950s. They were the first gospel group to perform at secular venues such as the APOLLO THEATER and CARNEGIE HALL in NEW YORK as well as the famed NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL. In 1973 the group collaborated with pop singer PAUL SIMON on “Loves Me Like A Rock,” which propelled them to even broader fame and resulted in a GRAMMY for their own rendition of the song.
Funeral services for DAVIS will be held in PHILADELPHIA on FRIDAY (4/27) at the SECOND PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH at 15th and OGDEN with a viewing starting at 9a and a service at 11a.
