Washington Court: Talk Shows Aren't Campaign Contributions
April 27, 2007 at 5:42 AM (PT)
The WASHINGTON State Supreme Court handed FISHER Talk KVI-A/SEATTLE and all talk shows a big victory by ruling that the mere discussion of a topic or advocacy of a position does not constitute a campaign donation.
The ruling reversed a Superior Court judge's previous finding that discussions on KVI by hosts KIRBY WILBUR and JOHN CARLSON in favor of a ballot proposal to cancel a gas tax represented an in-kind contribution to the Initiative 912 campaign, as charged in a suit brought by the cities of SEATTLE, AUBURN, and KENT and SAN JUAN COUNTY. In addition, the Superme Court reinstated the Initiative 912 campaign's countersuit against the cities and county for violating its First Amendment rights.
