WARNER MUSIC GROUP has filed a lawsuit against the music-based social networking Web site IMEEM INC. This lawsuit is related to accusations of copyright violations of their artists including MADONNA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and GREEN DAY. WARNER has claimed in their lawsuit that IMEEM used their copyright media to build a user base of 16 million users.
The service allows the users to create profiles on the web and they can upload their MP3 files which are shared with their friends. IMEEM claims that they alert the members on not uploading any copyrighted media on the service as it is against the law. Apparently, WARNER is not exactly satisfied.
WARNER said in a statement, "IMEEM is no innocent infringer. It invites IMEEM’s millions of users to flock to its website to copy, adapt, distribute and perform unlicensed sound recordings and music videos." IMEEM incidentally is backed by SEQUOIA CAPITAL which is also a investor in GOOGLE-owned YOUTUBE service, which is facing similar lawsuits from VIACOM and ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE.
