Former USDA Radio/TV Chief Layne R. Beaty Dead At 93

Condolences to family and friends of former UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Chief of Radio and TV LAYNE R. BEATY, who died MAY 11 of cutaneous lymphoma, complicated by congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, in MITCHELLVILLE, MD at 93, according to the WASHINGTON POST.
BEATY, who started in radio with a weekly farm show at WKY-A/OKLAHOMA CITY in the late 1930s and later was Farm Dir. at WBAP-A/FORT WORTH-DALLAS, headed up the USDA's radio and TV broadcasts from 1955 through 1980. He hosted "THE NATIONAL FARM AND HOME HOUR" on NBC radio for five years, served as a regular on agriculture shows on ABC and CBS radio, and hosted the syndicated agriculture TV show "ACROSS THE FENCE" from 1960 to 1980.
