Broward County Reverses Course, Renews WIOD Deal

Battered by complaints from the public, BROWARD COUNTY Commissioners tell the SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL that they will likely renew the county's deal for CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WIOD-A/MIAMI to serve as its official emergency information station. The all-Democrat commission, spearheaded by Commissioner STACY RITTER, had considered canceling the deal (NET NEWS 6/13) because WIOD carries conservative talk hosts like RUSH LIMBAUGH and SEAN HANNITY, a move LIMBAUGH called "politicizing the delivery of emergency news, which is non-partisan."
If your roof gets blown off, do you really care if the radio station that is giving you the information that you need also carries Rush Limbaugh?
"If your roof gets blown off, do you really care if the radio station that is giving you the information that you need also carries RUSH LIMBAUGH?" asked Commissioner KRISTIN JACOBS. "I don't think so. I don't agree with that man's philosophy and I don't listen to him, but I'm not going to not choose WIOD because of it."
The deal guarantees that BROWARD COUNTY emergency press conferences during hurricanes will be carried in their entirety by WIOD, which has a strong signal throughout BROWARD. BROWARD COUNTY, which includes FT. LAUDERDALE, has long felt shortchanged by MIAMI-based media in emergencies, and the deal is intended to ensure that the county has a major outlet to provide full coverage of emergency preparations and information.
