WFMR/Milwaukee Readies Smooth Jazz Flip
June 25, 2007 at 4:06 PM (PT)
ALL ACCESS has confirmed that SAGA Classical WFMR/MILWAUKEE will be flipping to Smooth Jazz tonight at midnight. Exiting are PD STEVE MURPHY (reach him at email@example.com) and local middayer CRAIG HEABLER; the rest of the programming had been via satellite. SMOOTH JAZZ NETWORK personalities RAMSEY LEWIS and DAVE KOZ will air in mornings and afternoons, respectively.
The flip marks a return to Smooth Jazz for the 106.9 frequency, which aired the format from 1995-1997, and follows the recent flip of crosstown MILWAUKEE RADIO ALLIANCE Smooth Jazz WJZI to AC (NET NEWS 6/19).
Sustaining a Classical format in this day and age is increasingly difficult ...
President/GM TOM JOERRES said, "The other MILWAUKEE radio station dropping the Smooth Jazz format this past week was finally the opportunity to take 106.9 back to its roots. It literally was made to play Smooth Jazz. Also this past year there was twice as much interest in Smooth Jazz than interest in the Classical format that 106.9 has been offering. It was an opportunity to satisfy twice as many listeners interest in our community and fill a recent void in the market. Additionally, WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO WHAD's HD2 currently offers Classical music 24/7, including symphonies, choral groups, concertos, etc."
SAGA Exec. VP/Programming STEVE GOLDSTEIN said, "Sustaining a Classical format in this day and age is increasingly difficult, but we are proud to have chosen another great cultural format that has a large following in the MILWAUKEE area. We have involved two of the top names in Jazz as hosts -- RAMSEY LEWIS and DAVE KOZ -- to ensure that the programming is vibrant and compelling."
The FCC recently granted 106.9 a construction permit to move its antenna from its original MENOMONEE FALLS location to the 106.9 studio and tower location on McKinley Avenue in MILWAUKEE. In the move, 106.9 not only will be offered in HD but will be centered in the metro area. The new signal is set to debut in AUGUST.
