BILL PINKNEY, the last survivor of the original members of THE DRIFTERS, was found dead yesterday (7/4) at the HILTON DAYTONA BEACH OCEANFRONT RESORT. He was 81.
PINKNEY was scheduled to perform with his group THE ORIGINAL DRIFTERS for FOURTH OF JULY festivities at the resort; the rest of the band still performed, and an announcement about PINKNEY's death was made after the show. DAYTONA BEACH police spokesman JIMMIE FLYNT said the death was not considered suspicious.
PINKNEY's manager, MAXINE PORTER, told REUTERS that PINKNEY had been suffering from heart problems recently but that it was too soon to say if the cause of death was a heart attack. PORTER said a funeral would be held next week in SUMTER, SC.
PINKNEY, who pitched for the NEW YORK BLUE SOX of the NEGRO BASEBALL LEAGUE, had left THE DRIFTERS in 1958 in a dispute over money and later set up THE ORIGINAL DRIFTERS.
