MUSICNET has struck a deal with EMI Music and several independent labels to distribute more than one million DRM-free tracks in MP3 format. Other participating labels include NETTWERK, MADACY and NITRO, as well as labels represented by DIGITAL MUSIC GROUP, INC., the DIGITAL RIGHTS AGENCY and INDEPENDENT RECORDING INDUSTRY SERVICES. The MP3 tracks will be made available at a higher sound quality.
This new arrangement will allow greater interoperability among devices, which has been a sore spot for the digital music industry since inception, according to MEDIANET Pres./CEO ALAN MCGLADE. "Making these first million tracks available for unencrypted download will help fuel alternative mechanisms of accessing digital music, giving consumers a choice in how they interact with their music."
