Z100 Takes NYC Ratings Crown!
October 15, 2007 at 2:47 PM (PT)
A little history was made in the first batch of Summer 2007 ratings. RADIOCRUNCH President ANTHONY ACAMPORA gives us a sneak peek right now -- and will be delivering more in-depth demo analysis as the week progresses:
New York: Z100 Back On Top; WRKS New #2; WCBS-FM Soars
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) soared to the top spot, moving 4.6-5.1. It's the first time Z100 has been #1 since sometime in the '80s. Surging to second was EMMIS Urban AC WRKS, which moved 3.7-4.4, climbing all the way from sixth in the Spring ... But the big move of the book goes to CBS Classic Hits WCBS-FM, which vaulted 2.0-3.7 to move into a tie for sixth place. The big jump by WCBS-FM looks to have come primarily at the expense of CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW, the market's perennial leader. WLTW slipped 5.4-4.3, and dropped from first to third. WLTW's main rival, CBS AC WWFS was also off a bit (3.1-2.5), but that's still a huge improvement over its prior Rhythmic AC approach. CBS Alternative WXRK had its first full book in the format and debuted with a 1.7.
Top 40 is the #1 English-language music format in both New York and Los Angeles
Los Angeles: L.A. Loves KLVE; KROQ, KRTH Score Big Gains
UNIVISION replaced itself atop the L.A. ratings this summer. Spanish Contemporary KLVE rose 4.1-4.9, succeeding Regional Mexican sister KSCA, which was off 5.1-4.5 and slipped to third ... Top 40 is the #1 English-language music format in both New York and Los Angeles. CLEAR CHANNEL's KIIS went 4.8-4.7 to capture the top spot among English stations. CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI went 4.2-4.5 to tie with KSCA for third. Rounding out the top five is CBS Alternative KROQ, which surges 3.2-3.8 and moves up from 10th in the spring ... CBS Radio's FM properties in L.A. had good book all around. Classic Hits KRTH soared 3.1-3.6 to post its largest 12+ share in recent memory. Adult Hits KCBS-FM (Jack) went 2.7-2.8 and FM Talker KLSX was up 1.6-1.9 ... After debuting with a 1.8 in the Spring, MOUNT WILSON Country KKGO slid 1.8-1.4 ... Two high-profile changes are still looking to gain a foothold. RADIO ONE Urban AC KRBV was off 1.5-1.2, while EMMIS Rhythmic AC KMVN slipped 1.2-0.8. Those numbers for KMVN reflect the station prior to a change in music direction toward the '70s and '80s that occurred right at the Fall book.
Chicago: WGN Rides Cubs To The Top; WOJO Surges; V103 Ties WGCI-FM
TRIBUNE News/Talk WGN-A rode the NL Central Champion Cubs to the top of the Summer ratings book, as the station vaulted 5.8-6.6 ... This put WGN nearly two full shares ahead of CBS News WBBM-A, which moved 4.3-4.7 to capture the #2 spot ... UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO surged 3.6-4.6 to move into the third position ... Tied for fourth were CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WVAZ (3.7-4.5) and Urban sister WGCI-FM (5.1-4.5). WGCI-FM was off for a fourth straight book. CLEAR CHANNEL Smooth Jazz WNUA grew nicely (3.8-4.2) and Top 40 sister WKSC (3.6-3.5) finished ahead of CBS Rhythmic rival WBBM-FM (B96), although B96 closed the gap, moving 2.9-3.2 ... After a couple of up books, BONNEVILLE Rhythmic AC WILV (100.3 Love-FM) slides 2.2-1.7 ... EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101) remained at a 1.5, with sister WLUP sliding 2.1-1.9.
