Philly, Houston December PPM: Holiday-Themed AC's Soar, Urban Scores
December 31, 2007 at 2:46 PM (PT)
JERRY LEE-owned AC WBEB/PHILADELPHIA and CLEAR CHANNEL’s KODA/HOUSTON delivered massive 6+ AQH share numbers in the just-released PPM results for DECEMBER. The actual month measured was NOVEMBER 15-DECEMBER 12 -- which is the final regular ratings currency for 2007. Both stations aired primarily holiday music during the period.
WBEB scored a 15.8 share 6+ in DECEMBER -- up 93% from the 7.6 share it received in NOVEMBER. KODA surged from a fourth place 5.2 share in NOVEMBER to a market leading 8.9 share in DECEMBER -- with growth of 71%. The next report will be the holiday currency -- which covers DECEMBER 13-JANUARY 9 -- and will be released next month.
Also in HOUSTON, RADIO ONE saw Urban KBXX and Urban AC sister KMJQ both climb 5.4-6.1 to tie for second place. Several of HOUSTON's Spanish language stations slid back in DECEMBER. CLEAR CHANNEL Spanish Contemporary KLOL (5.2-4.6), UNIVISION Regional Mexican KLTN (4.7-4.3), UNIVISION Spanish Oldies KOVE (3.3-3.0), and LIBERMAN Spanish Contemporary KQQK (2.3-2.0) were all off. LIBERMAN did see an uptick for Regional Mexican KTJM (2.2-2.7), while UNIVISION scored a debut of a 0.4 for new Spanish Contemporary sign-on KAMA -- which flipped just one week prior to the end of the month. KAMA is competing primarily against KLOL and KQQK -- so it will be interesting to watch its growth over the next 30-60 days.
In PHILADELPHIA, WBEB had a 129% larger share than any other station in the market in DECEMBER. A number of stations in a variety of formats seemed to be affected by the holiday potpourri at WBEB. Of the 25 other stations that achieved over a 1.0 share in DECEMBER, there were 8 stations up, 15 down, and 2 flat. WBEB clearly took audience from a number of places: CBS Classic Hits WOGL (6.8-5.5), BEASLEY Country WKIS (5.4-4.5), Non-Com Talker WHYY (4.1-3.2), GREATER MEDIA Adult Hits WBEN (3.3-2.9), CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WISX (3.1-2.3) and GREATER MEDIA Smooth Jazz WJJZ (1.9-1.5) all saw declines.
Some good news in PHILLY for Urban-formatted stations. CLEAR CHANNEL saw Urban AC WDAS-FM (5.2-5.4) and Urban WUSL (2.4-2.7) grow slightly. RADIO ONE’s trio of Urban AC WRNB (2.9-3.0), WPHI (2.3-2.4), and Gospel WPPZ (3.4-3.4) were all either flat or up.
