Soundscan: Holiday Sales Down 21%

More evidence of the music business' transformation from traditional brick-and-mortar to online retail comes with NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN data, which shows that 2007 CHRISTMAS season CD sales fell 21% from the 2006 holiday season. VARIETY reports that 83.9 million albums were sold during the prime buying season in 2007, compared to approximately 105.3 million during the same time last year.
The story also notes that next week's tally is expected to be goosed by a sizable number of sales via online gift cards, which should help temper the CD sales decline.
