KFI Gets Town OK For Tower Rebuild

CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A/LOS ANGELES has won approval to rebuild its tower in LA MIRADA, CA, as the City Council voted late TUESDAY to approve the project.
The rebuilding of the tower, which fell when a private plane hit it in a fatal crash three years ago, was opposed by officials of adjacent FULLERTON and the FULLERTON AIRPORT. It had stood at the site, just off Interstate 5, since 1948. The new tower will stand 684 feet, 76 feet shorter than the old tower but taller than the 200 foot tower segment that stands there now and transmits a half-power signal for the station. Despite airport officials' complaints that the location was dangerous to aviation, the FAA and other experts say that the tower is safe.
Construction, scheduled for the summer, will take about a month, during which KFI will use a tower formerly used by sister Talk KTLK-A in MONTECITO HEIGHTS, north of downtown LOS ANGELES and also visible from Interstate 5.
