CBS News, WGA Reach Deal On New Contract

CBS NEWS has reached a deal with the WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA EAST and WEST that will include a 3.5% raise and a one-time signing bonus of $3,700 for full-timers. The pact covers about 500 news writers, editors, researchers, and production assistants in the network's NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO and WASHINGTON bureaus.
The last contract covering the workers expired on APRIL 1st, 2005; CBS had been seeking a smaller salary increase for local radio employees represented by the union, but dropped that demand. The union rank-and-file voted to authorize a strike in NOVEMBER but did not walk out.
