Radiohead's "In Rainbow" #1 ... But Was There A Pot Of Gold?

Critically acclaimed British Alternative band RADIOHEAD took the top spot on the NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN charts this week, as its "In Rainbows" CD sold 122,000 copies. Yet the band's decision to put the music online three months earlier -- and let its fans decide what or if to pay for it -- will have analysts speculating "what ifs" for the foreseeable future.
Since the band's representatives won't say exactly how many albums were initially downloaded, it's difficult to compare the reception to the new release against its predecessor, "Hail To The Thief," which sold 300,000 out of the box in 2003. Obviously, the online experiment had an impact; how much of one -- and if it was a positive or negative one in terms of overall sales -- is up for considerable debate.
