The NEW YORK TIMES reports that MARIO LAVANDEIRA, better known as Internet gossip maven PEREZ HILTON, is currently negotiating with WARNER BROS. RECORDS for his own boutique label. The paper quotes sources who say that the preliminary talks are discussing a deal where LAVANDEIRA would get a $100,000 salary, which would be used as an advance against half of any profits generated by artists he signs.
The website PEREZHILTON.COM attracts an estimated 2.8 million visitors a month, according to COMSCORE MEDIA METRIX, with its distinctive, albeit catty, celebrity coverage, as well as HILTON's music recommendations. His hype purportedly helped unsigned singer-songwriter ERIC HUTCHINSON. Soon after the site raved about his music and linked to some of his tunes, HUTCHINSON’s album cracked the Top 10 on iTUNES. When LAVANDEIRA talked up dance-pop group ULTRAVIOLET SOUND, the numbers of visitors to the band's MYSPACE site roughly tripled and, according to band members, elicited the interest of club bookers.
"I think I could do a lot for them ... Madonnaâ??s leaving, Perez is coming
LAVANDEIRA told the TIMES that such a label deal would illustrate the growing clout of blogs and like-minded websites in the music business. Citing MADONNA's decision to leave the same label group he's currently negotiating with, he said. "I think I could do a lot for them ... MADONNA’s leaving, PEREZ is coming."
