A day after announcing that it is picking up the ESPN RADIO affiliation for PHILADELPHIA as "950 ESPN," GREATER MEDIA Sports WPEN-A has added former crosstown CBS Sports WIP-A host MIKE MISSANELLI for afternoons 3-7p, beginning APRIL 1st. MISSANELLI, a former PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER sportswriter most recently at ESPN Sports WEPN-A (1050 ESPN)/NEW YORK as STEPHEN A. SMITH's co-host and before that co-host of GREATER MEDIA Rock WMMR's morning show, bumps current afternoon host JODY MCDONALD to middays 9a-1p. WPEN will carry ESPN's MIKE TIRICO in the 1-3p slot and announced yesterday that it is adding ESPN's MIKE AND MIKE for mornings.
"MIKE MISSANELLI is a name that resonates with PHILLY sports fans and he is a lightening rod for great sports talk," said Station Manager BOB DEBLOIS. "We are thrilled to bring MIKE's passion and knowledge back to the PHILADELPHIA airwaves."
"I'm extremely excited about coming back to PHILADELPHIA and joining our great lineup with MIKE AND MIKE, JODY MAC, and the ESPN brand," said MISSANELLI. "Having worked in NEW YORK CITY for the past few years, I made up my mind that I wouldn't come back to PHILADELPHIA unless it was the right opportunity. This is the right opportunity ... I'm happy to be part of a station that's committed to being the best Sports Talk radio station in town."
"We recognized this as an opportunity that was great for MIKE's career doing PM drive in his hometown. All of us at 1050 are very happy for him," added WEPN PD AARON SPIELBERG on MISSANELLI's departure. "We’re delighted that he will continue with 1050 on weekends, including hosting a SUNDAY morning golf program beginning next month."
