KMAJ Makes Cates' Departure Immediate

CUMULUS Talk KMAJ-A/TOPEKA host JIM CATES' retirement started about seven months earlier than CATES had planned, after the station dismissed him from his 8-11a slot following WEDNESDAY's show. The TOPEKA CAPITAL-JOURNAL reports that the firing came as a surprise to CATES, who said he had differences with management, including being told not to do an hour of open lines every day and not to do certain undisclosed topics.
The station's SVP SPIKE SANTEE told the paper, "We will be trying out a number of different hosts. We're going to take our time because, to us, that's a marquee position." TOPEKA City Councilman BRETT BLACKBURN filled in TODAY.
