A racially inflammatory song performed by an in-studio guest last MARCH has led to the firing of CBS RADIO Active Rock WYSP/PHILADELPHIA morning host KIDD CHRIS and PD JOHN COOK. The song in question was a take-off of BLONDIE's "Call Me" called "Schwoogies," was sung on MARCH 21st by a guest named LADY GASH.
The song, which used a variety of demeaning slurs to describe African-Americans, aired several more times later that day and at least once MARCH 24th, before being virally spread by listeners and through YOUTUBE.
"We found the song to be highly offensive and completely inappropriate for broadcast on our airwaves," CBS RADIO spokeswoman KAREN MATEO told PHILLY.COM. "When senior management of the station learned that it had been played, they took immediate steps to prevent it from ever appearing on the station again. At the same time, we launched an extensive internal investigation into the situation including a thorough review of the editorial controls and systems we have in place to prevent this type of content from airing. We instituted additional educational training for the station, and have taken appropriate disciplinary action, including termination of the individuals involved."
It is not known how KIDD CHRIS' dismissal has impacted his contract with WYSP, which reportedly has three years left to run. CHRIS' agent, ROBERT EATMAN, wouldn't comment on any contractual issues, but did note that he expected CHRIS to return to the air in the foreseeable future.
