Clear Channel Gets TRO Blocking Friedman's Move... For Now

A judge on TUESDAY granted CLEAR CHANNEL its request for a temporary restraining order keeping its former Online Music and Radio division VP/News Talk & Sports ANDY FRIEDMAN from joining LOCAL TV LLC, RANDY MICHAELS' TV station group affiliated with TRIBUNE CO., pending a hearing on the matter. FRIEDMAN exited CLEAR CHANNEL on MAY 12th and joined LOCAL TV LLC as VP of the LOCAL TV-TRIBUNE station management venture owned by TRIBUNE; CLEAR CHANNEL claims his contract with them runs through DECEMBER 31st. FRIEDMAN, who contends that his noncompete was nullified when he rejected CLEAR CHANNEL's severance offer, will have to sit out for the next 10 days while the matter makes its way through the court.
CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS reports that U.S. District Court Judge JOAN GOTTSCHALL granted the TRO request on TUESDAY while denying CLEAR CHANNEL a TRO against LOCAL TV and TRIBUNE directly; the parties will return to court WEDNESDAY to set a hearing in the matter. The judge also ordered FRIEDMAN to return any materials containing confidential company information to CLEAR CHANNEL.
