Effectively immediately, ARBITRON has added a new format descriptor, "Smooth AC." The new format SIP has been supported by major radio groups deeply invested in the Smooth AC format including CLEAR CHANNEL, CBS, GREATER MEDIA and BROADCAST ARCHITECTURE.
In a letter announcing the new format descriptor, ARBITRON stated: "We are pleased to inform you that we will be adding Smooth AC as a reporting option for all stations effective immediately. Please note that the quarterly Station Information Packets (SIPs) for the SPRING 2008 and SUMMER 2008 surveys have already been mailed and that Smooth AC was not included on the list of ARBITRON-recognized format descriptors. However, Smooth AC will be available for any station that wishes to update its format descriptor during those surveys and will be added to the list of recognized formats in the FALL 2008 SIP."
'Smooth AC' is strictly geared toward the radio advertising community to better align us with our function and audience delivery within the radio industry
CBS RADIO KTWV/LOS ANGELES GM DAN WEINER stated: "Our format is an AC hybrid with many contemporary vocals and instrumental covers. Over 20 years ago 'New AC' was launched and the audience began describing the music as 'Smooth Jazz.' Today the listeners still identify positively with that description but in agencies we feel that ‘Smooth AC’ is a better way to describe the format."
"The Smooth AC descriptor really hits the mark," GREATER MEDIA WJJZ/PHILADELPHIA Station Manager JIM BROWN said. "It more accurately describes our format today for the industry. These days our station is more mainstream and mass appeal than it was years ago. This music is all that jazz and more, and the new descriptor captures that feeling better."
"As the format has evolved over the years, it has become more and more mainstream," noted CLEAR CHANNEL/SAN FRANCISCO National Sales Manager MARCY MILLS. "Our artists are creating and playing music for fans from all walks of life and all musical tastes. The format fits neatly in the AC category and just like "hot" or "soft"; the word "smooth" describes its tempo. I am happy to let KKSF come out of the small niche category of 'jazz' that may have had it mistakenly associated with a limited highbrow fan base. KKSF is a lot more things to a lot more people than we may have given it credit for.”
"This new format descriptor much more accurately represents the Smooth Jazz format within the advertising community," stated BA Pres. ALLEN KEPLER. "Smooth AC is a dynamic format with outrageously enthusiastic fans that not only actively attend concerts and station events, but also command the largest income block of any measured demo ... All of our strategic research reinforces that the ‘Smooth Jazz’ brand name remains highly popular among listeners. This new description 'Smooth AC' is strictly geared toward the radio advertising community to better align us with our function and audience delivery within the radio industry."
