BO DIDDLEY, born ELLAS OTHA BATES, on DECEMBER 30, 1928 in MCCOMB, MS, has died at age 79. A spokeswoman said the rock pioneer died of heart failure TODAY (6/2) in JACKSONVILLE, FL. He had suffered a heart attack in AUGUST 2007, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in IOWA.
Doctors said the stroke affected his ability to speak, and he had returned to FLORIDA to continue rehabilitation.
He was often cited as a key figure in the transition from blues to rock and roll, introducing more insistent, driving rhythms and a hard-edged guitar sound. He was also known for his characteristic rectangular guitar.
