June 9, 2008 at 5:38 AM (PT)
PRAIRIE AIR, INC. noncommercial Variety WEFT/CHAMPAIGN, IL returned to the air SATURDAY after a transmitter failure during FRIDAY night's severe storms, but the station is using a 50 watt temporary signal instead of the usual 10,000 watts.
A circuit board in the main transmitter failed on FRIDAY, and water was found in the tube chamber. The station's official statement says that it "will be reviewing our options this week, including the acquisition of a new transmitter, while seeking sources of funding." Listeners unable to pick up the smaller signal can hear the station online at weft.org.
