All Access Exclusive: Legendary Bay Area Stations Shaken Up In PPM
August 18, 2008 at 7:09 AM (PT)
ALL ACCESS goes to RADIOCRUNCH President ANTHONY ACAMPORA to look inside the first pre-currency PPM data from SAN FRANCISCO.
There was definitely some major shifting in the Bay Area, with tremendous growth for CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KIOI (STAR 101.3) and CBS Rhythmic AC KMVQ (MOVIN 99-7). However, the news was not good for UNIVISION's trio of stations - Regional Mexican KSOL, Latin Urban KVVF and Spanish Adult Hits KBRG (RECUERDO). In addition, INNER CITY Urban AC KBLX, ENTERCOM Classical KDFC, FLYING BEAR MEDIA Dance KNGY, and CITADEL Talk KGO-A saw drops in demo.
25-54: ENTERCOM AC KOIT takes over the top spot (it was #2 in the final diary book this Spring). However, surging into the #2 position is KIOI, who ranked 9th in the diary. CUMULUS Classic Rock KSAN ranks 3rd (it was 5th in the diary), while sister Triple A KFOG was 4th. KQED INC. noncommercial News/Talk KQED - always a solid performer in the diary (although their numbers were not published) still ranks 5th in the meter. UNIVISION Regional Mexican KSOL - who has been #1 of late in the diary - slips all the way to 6th. CUMULUS Sports KNBR-A was 7th, with CBS News KCBS-A 8th (just one spot lower than the diary, but KQED is now in the mix). CLEAR CHANNEL Urban-leaning Rhythmic KMEL is 9th, with SBS Regional Mexican KRZZ 10th. The gap between KSOL and KRZZ is definitely smaller in the meter.
CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC KISQ was off slightly in the meter, ranking 11th (they were 7th in the diary). In 12th place was CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic KYLD (up from 15th the diary). One of the biggest bumps goes to CBS Rhythmic AC KMVQ (MOVIN 99-7). KMVQ ranked 22nd in the diary, and surges all the way to 13th in the meter. As happened in NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, and CHICAGO, the meter was not kind to Urban formats as INNER CITY Urban AC KBLX plummeted from 4th in the diary to 14th 25-54 in the meter. CBS Alternative KITS (LIVE 105) was 15th. ENTERCOM Country KBWF ranks 16th (up from 22nd in the Spring diary), but on par with previous diary periods. CLEAR CHANNEL Smooth AC KKSF (usually a top 10 or top 15 performer in the diary) ranks 17th in the meter. There also is major interest in the fate of long time CITADEL Talk KGO-A - which has been a dominant performer 12+ in the BAY AREA for decades. KGO still does well 12+, but the demos clearly skew much older as KGO dipped from 9th diary to 18th 25-54 meter. The first SAN JOSE station to appear is NEXTMEDIA Hot AC KEZR. It ranked 24th in the Spring diary and is 19th in the meter. UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KBRG (Recuerdo) - who was 9th in the diary, slides all the way to 20th in the meter.
Also off was CBS Hot AC KLLC (18th in the diary to 21st in the meter) and ENTERCOM Classical KDFC. The latter was top 15 in the diary 25-54 and plummets to 28th. Will Classical music survive the meter? CBS also didn't see too much growth for Classic Hits KFRC, which ranked 26th.
18-49: A nice win here for KMEL. After being #2 to KSOL in the diary, KMEL moves into the top position in the meter. KOIT ranks 2nd, with KSOL sliding to 3rd. The race between KSOL and rival KRZZ is really tight here - with KRZZ ranking 4th (KSOL and KRZZ were 1st and 9th 18-49 in the spring book. KYLD ranked 5th in both, with KIOI seeing a nice jump from 11th diary to 6th meter. KSAN slides a bit (4th diary to 7th meter). A healthy jump for KITS (LIVE 105), who was 12th in the spring book and ranks 8th in the meter. KQED and KCBS-A tie for 9th (a big leap for KCBS-AM which was 15th in the diary).
Another huge jump for KMVQ here - as they move up from 21st diary to 11th meter, tying with KFOG (who slides from 7th diary). KISQ drops from 7th diary to 13th meter, just ahead of KNBR in 14th. KBLX plummets from 6th diary to 15th meter. KBWF is 16th in the meter (up from 17th in the diary). KBRG drops here from 10th diary to 17th meter. KEZR is 18th (up from 24th in the diary). KLLC, which has been steadily declining in the diary, really did not get any help from the Hot AC friendly meter. It ranks 19th in both. UNIVISION Latin Urban KVVF drops from 14th diary to 20th meter. KGO - which was recently 17th 18-49 in the Spring (and as high as 10th in the winter), ranks 27th 18-49 in the meter.
18-34: This demo has traditionally been dominated by KSOL and with a decline in shares for the former market leader, KMEL moves into the #1 position. KYLD also moves past KSOL into the #2 position. KSOL and KRZZ take 3rd and 4th - were very close in share. To give you an example, KSOL beat KRZZ by 131% in the Spring diary and by 3% in the July meter results 18-34. KITS goes from 9th diary to 5th meter. KOIT is 6th with KSAN coming in 7th (comparable to diary results). KIOI leaps from 11th diary to 8th meter. ALOHA TRUST Alternative KCNL/SAN JOSE ranks 9th 18-34 in the meter - better than they had done in the diary.
Also of note: A lot dance fans were wondering how FLYING BEAR MEDIA's KNGY (ENERGY 92-7) would perform and the news was not favorable. Just as Alternative KDLD (INDIE 103.1)/LOS ANGELES has not translated to PPM, KNGY suffered as well. KNGY goes 19th diary to 26th meter 18-34, KNGY drops from 21st diary to 31st meter 18-49.
