WPRO: Host's Wife Caused Ratings Scandal
August 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM (PT)
CITADEL Talk WPRO-A-WEAN/PROVIDENCE has released a statement blaming the wife of morning show host JOHN DEPETRO for the ratings problem that saw six diaries flagged by ARBITRON, resulting in their elimination and WPRO dropping several slots in the 25-54 ratings. DEPETRO remained the top-rated 12+ show in morning drive even after the diaries were eliminated.
The statement from Market Manager BARBARA HAYNES read, "The media-related diaries that affected WPRO AM in the SPRING ARBITRON rating period were returned by the wife of WPRO-A’s morning host JOHN DEPETRO. JOHN states that he did not have knowledge of her actions. WPRO-A PD PAUL GIAMMARCO and I are profoundly disappointed by JOHN's wife’s actions."
Competitor "Shocked and Disappointed"
Crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO/PROVIDENCE VP/GM JIM CORWIN issued a release saying, "We are shocked and disappointed at today’s news that fraudulent ratings diaries have come from the home of an on-air personality at WPRO. ARBITRON ratings are an important part of our business and it is disheartening to learn that a competitor may have had the ability to influence their outcome.
"Ratings are a vital tool that help us make important decisions effecting our stations, our advertisers and our listeners. We appreciate the efforts of the ARBITRON COMPANY to rectify this situation and release accurate, non-biased ratings in a timely manner."
