WIP Wing Bowl 17: Local Amateurs Only
December 1, 2008 at 5:26 AM (PT)
CBS Sports WIP-A/PHILADELPHIA's 17th annual WING BOWL chicken wing eating contest will return the competition to a locals-only, amateur event, with all professional competitive eaters barred. Morning host ANGELO CATALDI announced the change in rules on MONDAY's show, on which he also announced that tickets for the JANUARY 30 contest at WACHOVIA CENTER will go on sale DECEMBER 15th.
The contest, created by CATALDI and morning co-host AL MORGANTI in 1991, has become a major promotion for the station, packing the arena and receiving substantial press attention. Pro eater JOEY CHESTNUT has won the title for the last three years but is ineligible to defend his title; in last year's contest, CHESTNUT and fellow professional PATRICK BERTOLETTI finished in the top two positions, with local eater and former champion BILL "EL WINGADOR" SIMMONS finishing third.
