Alaska AM Built In The Nick Of Time

The saga of JOHN KLAPPERICH's quest to get a new AM station on the air in WASILLA, AK before the construction permit expired ended with success last week, as NBC affiliate KTUU (TV)/ANCHORAGE reports that KLAPPERICH's SPIRIT OF ALASKA BROADCASTING got KMBQ-A/WASILLA on the air after overcoming vocal -- and sometimes physical -- oppsition to the new station from neighbors in MAT-SU BOROUGH.
KLAPPERICH, who owns AC KMBQ-F (Q99.7), faced a DECEMBER 12th deadline to get the 1,000-watt station on the air, but was literally roadblocked from construction, with neighbors blocking the road to the property near COTTONWOOD CREEK and protesting that the station would cause health problems and was being built in wetlands. KLAPPERICH and a crew of six were able to get the tower built and the station on the air with a simulcast of the FM station on WEDNESDAY.
